Trump Attacks our Efforts to
Fight Climate Change
Dear friend,
The Clean Power Plan – an Obama-era regulation that established our first and only nationwide limits on climate pollution from power plants – was lauded by environmental groups as a bold initiative that would drive American innovation. It sent a strong message to the world that we care about the health of future generations. President Obama even hailed it as the single-most important step our country has ever taken to fight climate change.
But now, this critical proposal is in jeopardy.
Last month, President Trump’s Environmental Protection Agency introduced its replacement for the Clean Power Plan, and it’s a bad as you think. Their proposal isn’t only a massive handout to coal companies, but also a public health disaster in the making. By the administration’s own calculations, their replacement plan would lead to as many as 1,600 premature deaths every year and up to 15,000 new cases of upper respiratory problems — costing lives and billions to the economy.
As I continue to fight this rollback at the federal level and advocate for strong measures to address climate change, I am committed to providing you with updates on this proposed plan, as it’s widely expected to be challenged in court. Thanks for taking the time to read this and please feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
U.S. Congressman Jimmy Gomez
