Dear Neighbors,
I wanted to update you on what has been happening in the House of Representatives over the past week—and it has been a lot.
House Democrats stopped our government from shutting down and held the line after conservatives brought us to the brink. House conservatives proposed an extreme agenda that would have slashed food and housing assistance by over 30% and jeopardized other key programs. Democrats stood together and opposed these plans. Our work forced the right to agree to a clean spending bill that stopped their destructive policies and will keep our government funded for 45 days.
I voted to remove Kevin McCarthy from his post as Speaker of the House after his colleagues on the right brought up a motion to vacate. Conservative infighting led us to this unprecedented point and, with McCarthy officially removed from his leadership role, we don’t yet know who will be the next Speaker of the House.
The Speaker should be elected for their ability to lead, not their ability to grovel. I voted to vacate McCarthy as Speaker because his policies don't align with our constituents' values. The only person fit to sit in the Speaker's chair is a Democrat who puts our country over politics.
While conservatives attempt to turn our government into a circus, I’m committed to prioritizing the needs of our district. We are in new territory in the House and, though the right seems more interested in fighting and politics, my focus remains on advocating for policies that empower families to thrive.
I want to keep you updated on what I’m working on in the House. Let’s stay connected. Subscribe here and follow me online at @RepJimmyGomez on all platforms.
