Rep. Gomez Votes Again to Stop Trump’s Unauthorized War with Iran

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Jimmy Gomez released the following statement after voting for the third time for a War Powers Resolution to force an end to President Trump’s unauthorized war with Iran.

“I voted once again to end Trump’s reckless war with Iran,” said Congressman Gomez. This was the third time I voted to stop Trump from taking us even further down this disastrous path, and support for these resolutions keeps growing because more Republicans are realizing the American people are paying the price for Trump’s chaos.

“Trump blew past the 60-day deadline under the War Powers Resolution and is pretending this war has somehow magically ‘ended’ while U.S. troops remain deployed and military operations continue. That’s not how the law works.

“Families are already feeling the consequences. Gas prices are rising. Costs are going up. Meanwhile, Trump refuses to take responsibility for the mess he created.

“The closer these votes get, the more obvious it becomes that support for Trump’s war is collapsing. Congress has a constitutional duty to act, and I’ll keep voting to end this war for as long as it takes."

The House vote marked the third congressional vote this year on legislation seeking to limit President Trump’s military actions against Iran without congressional authorization. The latest resolution came after the expiration of the 60-day deadline established under the War Powers Resolution of 1973.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Jimmy Gomez warns that President Trump’s war with Iran is driving up inflation, raising costs for working families, and making it harder for Americans to afford basic necessities as gas prices and supply chain costs continue to climb.
Reps. Gomez, Goldman Introduce New Legislation to Invest $10 Billion Annually in Afterschool Learning Programs

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, U.S. Representatives Jimmy Gomez (CA-34) and Dan Goldman (NY-10), founding members of the Congressional Dads Caucus, introduced the Afterschool for All Act, new legislation that would provide $10 billion in federal funding annually for 10 years after school and summer learning programming. The programming would be fully paid for by a 1% increase in the corporate income tax rate.

"I’m introducing this bill because families need real support between the end of the school day and the end of the workday, and right now too many parents are left scrambling to cover this gap in care. I launched the Dads Caucus because I’ve seen firsthand how hard parents work to balance their jobs, the high cost of living, and being there for their kids. This bill will invest in afterschool programs to give children a safe place to learn and grow while helping parents get through the day with one less thing hanging over their heads," said Dads Caucus Chair Jimmy Gomez.

“Afterschool and summer learning programs are a lifeline for working parents and an invaluable source of enrichment for kids,” said Rep. Goldman. “But too often, the low-income families who need these programs the most are the ones who don’t have access to them. I am proud to be introducing this legislation to provide $10 billion a year to dramatically expand the availability of afterschool programs in communities nationwide and help make sure all of our kids are safe and supported, our parents can pursue their careers, and our economy can grow.”

"Afterschool programs are vital to keeping kids safe, supervised, and supported after school, delivering crucial academic enrichment and allowing parents to make a living," said David Garza, President & CEO of Henry Street Settlement, which operates eight after school programs on Manhattan's Lower East Side. "High-quality afterschool is a particularly urgent need for children of low-income parents like those Henry Street serves, who struggle with inconsistent hours, frequent layoffs, and neighborhood safety issues. A positive afterschool experience is a launching pad that lasts a lifetime, and we applaud Reps. Dan Goldman and Jimmy Gomez’s Afterschool for All Act, which will extend these benefits to children throughout the United States who live in poverty."

The Afterschool for All Act reauthorizes the Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Centers program and provides a tenfold increase in funding. This program, which expired in 2023, is the only federal funding source for afterschool and summer learning programming. The program enables state educational agencies to provide grants to schools and community organizations to offer afterschool activities focused on STEM, physical fitness and wellness, academic enrichment, nutrition and health education, service learning, financial literacy, apprenticeships, and other career readiness opportunities. Research consistently shows that high-quality afterschool programs improve grades, boost attendance, strengthen long-term earnings, and reduce juvenile crime.

The need for these programs remains substantial. Millions of working parents face a persistent care gap between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., the hours when juvenile crime and risky behaviors peak and when many families cannot secure safe, affordable supervision. Without these programs, parents can be forced to cut hours or leave jobs, and local businesses lose the stable workforce they depend on. In the 2022–2023 school year, Community Learning Centers served more than a million pre-K–12 students, but demand for afterschool programs far exceeds available funding.

The Afterschool for All Act would ensure that all students have access to afterschool opportunities by reauthorizing the Nita M. Lowey Community Learning Centers program and increasing its funding to $10 billion annually for the next decade. This tenfold expansion in funding would ensure that every low-income K-12 student - more than 10 million students nationwide - can access afterschool and summer learning programs, thereby giving them the same opportunities and support as their peers.

The bill is endorsed by RaisingHealth Partners, Chinese-American Planning Council (CPC), Henry Street Settlement, Center for Family Life In Sunset Park, and Grand Street Settlement.

Representatives Tim Kennedy (NY-26), George Latimer (NY-16), Seth Moulton (MA-06), Steve Cohen (TN-09), Joyce Beatty (OH-03), Eleanor Holmes Norton (DC-AL), Andre Carson (IN-07), Gil Cisneros (CA-31), and Cleo Fields (LA-06) cosponsor the legislation.
Rep. Jimmy Gomez Joins 250+ Democrats Urging Supreme Court to Protect Access to Mifepristone

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Jimmy Gomez joined more than 250 House and Senate Democrats in filing an amicus brief urging the Supreme Court to overturn a Fifth Circuit decision that threatens access to mifepristone, undermines women’s health care, and weakens the FDA’s long-established scientific approval process.

The brief follows emergency appeals from mifepristone manufacturers and a temporary stay issued by the Supreme Court while the case moves forward.

In the filing, lawmakers argued that mifepristone has been repeatedly proven safe and effective through the FDA’s rigorous approval and review process. They warned that allowing courts to override science-based decisions made by medical experts would set a dangerous precedent and further restrict access to reproductive health care across the country.

“For more than 25 years, the FDA has consistently affirmed that mifepristone is safe and effective, and millions of patients have used it safely,” the lawmakers wrote in the brief. “Allowing courts to overrule evidence-based medical decisions threatens both access to care and the integrity of the FDA’s approval process.”

The lawmakers also emphasized that reinstating burdensome in-person dispensing requirements would disproportionately harm patients in communities where reproductive health care providers are already difficult to access.

The amicus brief was signed by all 47 Senate Democrats and 212 House Democrats.
Rep. Gomez Slams Republicans for Having No Real Plan to Lower Health Care Costs for American Families

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Jimmy Gomez criticized Republicans during a Ways and Means Committee hearing for pushing a health care agenda that would leave Americans to fend for themselves while families across the country struggle with rising medical bills and insurance premiums. Gomez warned that Republicans have no serious plan to lower costs because they refuse to be honest about what they actually believe when it comes to health care.
Los Angeles Magazine | Clergy Members Denied Entry to ICE Detention Facility on Ash Wednesday

By Aidan Williams

Clergy members were turned away from providing Ash Wednesday services to detainees at Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s temporary holding facility in downtown Los Angeles.

The denial was communicated by ICE agents at the facility to a group of clergy from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Faith leaders had submitted a request on Monday, signed and submitted by U.S. House Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D-CA), to provide communion to detainees, many of whom are awaiting transfer to permanent detention facilities.

A group of roughly 50 protestors aligned with the Community Self Defense Coalition, which seeks to protect undocumented immigrants from ICE raids, were also stationed outside the building, though they were not trying to enter the facility with the clergy.

Ash Wednesday marks the first day of Lent, during which Christians fast, pray and perform penance in the lead-up to Easter. For believers, it is one of the holiest days of the year.

“Even if someone is in detention for only 12 hours, this is our most solemn day in our most Holy Week,” Matt Harper, a member of the Los Angeles Catholic Worker who accompanied clergy attempting to enter the ICE facility, said.

“There is no making up this ritual. There is no making up this day.”

When clergy members submitted a second request the next day, again signed and submitted by Rep. Gomez, an ICE field director responded that, because detainees were only being held temporarily, they did not require access to pastoral care.

Still, clergy members returned several weeks later on Good Friday. After a brief back-and-forth with ICE officials, the congregation was allowed inside the building to administer blessings to detainees.
Rep. Gomez Secures Good Friday Clergy Access to Downtown Los Angeles ICE Detention Facility

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Rep. Jimmy Gomez (CA) helped secure access for local clergy to enter the federal ICE detention facility at the Roybal Federal Building in Downtown Los Angeles on Good Friday, allowing detained individuals to observe one of the holiest days in the Christian faith.

After clergy were denied entry on Ash Wednesday, Rep. Gomez’s office engaged ICE officials, elevated formal requests, and continued pushing for access in the days leading up to Good Friday. As a result, four clergy members were permitted to enter the facility, where they led a prayer service, administered communion, and provided pastoral care to detained individuals.

The visit comes as Rep. Gomez has been actively conducting oversight of the facility, including areas known as B-17 and B-18, where detainees are often held after being taken into custody before transfer or removal proceedings. Rep. Gomez has raised concerns about access, transparency, and conditions inside the facility.

“I’ve spent months conducting oversight at this detention facility and pushing back on ICE’s efforts to hide what’s happening inside. When local clergy were denied entry on Ash Wednesday, my office kept pushing until ICE finally allowed them in on Good Friday," said Rep. Gomez. "Those inside were able to pray, receive communion, and observe one of the holiest days in the Christian faith. I’m going to keep pushing for access and transparency inside these detention facilities, and make sure the people inside are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve."

During the Good Friday visit, clergy prayed with detained individuals, blessed them with holy water, anointed them with holy oil, and offered communion. For many, it was a rare opportunity to participate in a religious observance while in custody.

Rep. Gomez will continue conducting oversight and advocating for transparency and humane treatment inside detention facilities.

Rep. Jimmy Gomez Introduces Bill Blocking Trump From Putting His Signature on U.S. Currency

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congressman Jimmy Gomez introduced legislation to prohibit the signature of President Donald Trump from appearing on United States currency or securities.

The bill comes after the Trump Administration announced plans to place Donald Trump’s signature on U.S. currency for the first time in American history, ending a tradition that has existed for more than 165 years.

“I introduced this bill because no sitting President should be allowed to use the nation’s currency to personally promote themselves,” said Rep. Jimmy Gomez. “Trump wants to slap his name on buildings, airports, and now the dollar bill, but U.S. currency belongs to the American people, not the President. This is the kind of thing you see from dictators and wannabe strongmen who think the country belongs to them, and I will not just go along with another one of Trump’s vanity projects.”

Under current law, U.S. paper currency includes the signatures of the Treasury Secretary and Treasurer of the United States. Trump’s proposal would remove the Treasurer’s signature and replace it with his own.

The legislation would amend title 31 of the United States Code to prohibit the issuance of United States currency or securities containing the signature of an individual during any period in which that individual is serving as President.
NBC News | House Democrat to introduce bill to bar Trump's signature from appearing on dollar bills

By Raquel Coronell Uribe

A California Democrat is set to introduce a bill that would block Trump’s signature from appearing on paper currency.

Rep. Jimmy Gomez will put the bill forth tomorrow morning, his press secretary, Billy Berler, said in an email. The planned bill, which would face an uphill battle to become law, would prohibit a sitting president from signing U.S. currency and securities.

“I introduced this bill because no sitting President should be allowed to use the nation’s currency to personally promote themselves,” Gomez said in a news release announcing his bill. “Trump wants to slap his name on buildings, airports, and now the dollar bill, but U.S. currency belongs to the American people, not the President.”
Politico | House bill would bar Trump's signature from US currency

By Aiden Reiter

Rep. Jimmy Gomez plans to introduce a bill Thursday to stop the Trump administration’s efforts to put the president’s signature on dollar bills.

Gomez’s (D-Calif.) proposal would make it illegal for any sitting U.S. president to put their name on the nation’s currency.

The bill comes a few days after the Treasury Department announced it would put President Donald Trump’s signature on new bills in “honor of the 250th anniversary of the United States of America.”

“Trump wants to slap his name on buildings, airports, and now the dollar bill, but U.S. currency belongs to the American people, not the President,” Gomez said. “No sitting president should be allowed to use the nation’s currency to personally promote themselves.”

The Treasury and the treasurer, who oversees the printing of U.S. currency, did not specify where the signature will appear on U.S. currency, which bills it will appear on or when, and did not respond to a request for comment.
