Statement from Rep. Gomez, Chair of Renters Caucus, on Secretary Marcia Fudge Retirement

"I am hopeful that the next HUD Secretary will pick up where Secretary Fudge left off to lower costs across the board, especially for America’s renters.”

LOS ANGELES, CA – Today U.S. Rep. Jimmy Gomez (CA-34), chair and founder of the Congressional Renters Caucus, released the following statement on the retirement of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Marcia Fudge:

“On behalf of the Renters Caucus, I want to thank Secretary Fudge for her years of service and dedication to creating a more equitable and affordable housing system. She has been a champion of greater housing initiatives, including efforts to target discrimination in housing, policies to lower rent and her leadership that created a historic increase in new housing units. As she enters retirement, there are more housing units under construction right now than at any time in the last 50 years.

“Our work is far from over, and I am hopeful that the next HUD Secretary will pick up where Secretary Fudge left off to lower costs across the board, especially for America’s renters. The Renters Caucus is ready to work closely with Secretary Fudge’s successor to eliminate the housing crisis and help the growing population of renters.”

Rep. Gomez is the founder and chair of the Congressional Renters Caucus, which works to lower high housing costs and address the needs of renters, a population that makes up over 44 million households nationwide. Gomez has introduced bills to invest in affordable housing, eliminate junk fees for renters, and stand up for renters in California and across the country.
