Whenever there is an opportunity to make government work better for everyday Americans, it’s important for lawmakers to set aside our differences, find common ground, and roll up our sleeves to get things done. That’s why I joined Rep. Virginia Foxx (R – North Carolina) to introduce the Grant Reporting Efficiency and Agreements Transparency (GREAT) Act, a bipartisan bill that will streamline the federal grant reporting process.
 
Every year, the U.S. government awards more than $600 billion in grants to state and local governments, agencies, and a wide variety of other organizations. Last year we saw more than $57.9 million in grants awarded to programs right here in California’s 34th Congressional District, including $600,000 for domestic violence services.
 
Talk to anyone that has applied for a federal grant, however, and you’ll find that it’s no secret that the federal government needs to modernize the way it conducts business. 
 
By leveraging technology, my bill, the GREAT Act, will streamline the federal grant process by replacing outdated documents with open data. This will increase transparency, reduce compliance costs, and ultimately break down barriers for new federal grant applicants who seek funding opportunities. 
 
Good governance means ensuring every citizen has equal access to the resources they need to succeed. The GREAT Act will do just that, helping to level the playing field for Angelenos—and for all Americans—who seek federal grants to better our communities.
