This past Friday night, I voted NO on the House Republicans’ bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security. I could not support legislation that continues to fund Trump’s ICE and CBP while failing to hold rogue agents who have violated the law accountable.
Over the past year, I’ve heard directly from constituents who have been put through unimaginable hardship. A man died in ICE custody. An eight-month-pregnant woman was deported before she was even entered into the system or her family was notified. Children are being separated from their parents.
These are not abstract policy debates. They are real people, real families, and real pain. When I hear these stories, I think about my own family. I am the son of two Mexican immigrants who came to this country, worked hard, and gave back. Today, I worry about my own mother traveling alone, concerned she could be harassed simply for who she is.
This is not about public safety. It’s about a system that too often targets people based on how they look, speak, or live.
I carry these stories with me every time a vote like this comes to the floor. And I will continue to stand up, speak out, and fight for accountability because our communities deserve dignity, fairness, and justice.
