Slammed ICE for the Killing of Two More Innocent People and Called for Prosecutions

This week, I took to the House floor to condemn the reckless actions of ICE, and put agents and officials who violate constitutional rights on notice that their actions will not be forgotten or excused.
 
Thirteen months ago, when the Trump Administration launched immigration raids in downtown Los Angeles, I warned that without accountability, the violence would escalate and people would die. Tragically, that's exactly what has happened.
 
Two fathers, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo and Joan Sebastian Guerrero, lost their lives after encounters with ICE, despite neither man being the agency's intended target. Their deaths were completely avoidable, and the tragic result of federal agents and an administration that operates without transparency or oversight.
 
To every ICE and CBP agent who believes their badge places them above the law, you are wrong. We will not rest until every single person who broke the law or violated someone's constitutional right is brought to justice.

Called for a Full Investigation into Lorenzo Salgado Araujo's Death

After learning of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo's death, I immediately joined his family in demanding a full, independent investigation.
 
As the son of two Mexican immigrants, Lorenzo's death is deeply personal to me. My parents came to this country believing that hard work would create a better future for their children. That story is shared by millions of immigrant families who have helped build our communities, including right here in Los Angeles.
 
Lorenzo was the father of three U.S. citizens, a husband, an employer, and a proud immigrant who spent 35 years working to achieve the American Dream. He put his children through college, helped build thousands of homes, and created dozens of jobs in his community. He did everything this country asks of hardworking people. His family deserves answers, the public deserves the truth, and if ICE agents violated the law, they must be held accountable.

While I was in Washington, Team Gomez attended Occidental College's Upward Bound College Fair, where we met with more than 200 local high school students exploring college and career opportunities.
 
Investing in the next generation is one of my top priorities. Programs like Upward Bound help students from underserved communities prepare for higher education and achieve their goals, and I'll continue fighting to ensure young people in our district have every opportunity to succeed.
