Last week, the Supreme Court reaffirmed one of the clearest promises in the Constitution: if you're born in the United States, you're an American citizen. Birthright citizenship isn't a gift from a president—it's a promise in the Constitution itself.
As the proud son of Mexican immigrants, this ruling is deeply personal. My parents came to this country believing that if they worked hard, their children would have opportunities they never had. My father was a bracero. My mother cleaned homes and cared for seniors. Their story is the story of millions of immigrant families who helped build this country.
When Donald Trump tried to rewrite the Constitution, I didn't stand on the sidelines. I led more than 200 House Democrats in urging the Supreme Court to reject his unconstitutional attack on birthright citizenship. When his administration blocked members of Congress from inspecting ICE detention centers, I sued and won, protecting Congress' authority to expose abuses and hold the administration accountable. I've fought for Dreamers, TPS holders, and immigrant families throughout my time in Congress.
Last week's ruling is an important victory, but the work isn't over. I'll continue defending the Constitution, protecting our communities, and standing up for the rights of every American.
