Hello [firstname],

Last year, the Republican majority in Congress passed one of the largest corporate tax cuts in American history, promising that it would result in economic growth, job creation, and higher wages. However, with every day that passes, I believe that this trickle-down fantasy is quickly being proven to be just that—a fantasy.

Take Wall Street for example: Just weeks after benefiting from one of the largest tax cuts, Bank of America terminated free checking accounts, transferring customers into accounts that charge a monthly fee.

It’s difficult to understand why, after receiving an astounding $3.5 billion in tax savings, one of our nation’s largest banks would end a program that low-income and working class families have long relied on.

That’s why I joined Congressman Elijah Cummings, the highest-ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, in a letter to Bank of America urging that the company reconsider its decision and instead consider doing the opposite—expand its no-fee products and other programs to help working families.

We also asked Bank of America to provide documents and information that might explain why the company felt compelled to end free-checking accounts—especially when they could have used their new savings to maintain a program that helps low-income and working class families move toward financial stability and independence.

I believe that America’s working families deserve to be empowered by our government and institutions, not be thrown under the bus for the sake of corporate profits. As a member of the powerful House Oversight Committee, I will continue to use every resource at my disposal to fight on your behalf.

Sincerely,

Rep. Jimmy Gomez
