Hello Friend,

My colleagues on the other side of the aisle are working nonstop to ram a tax plan through Congress that hurts our neighbors, steals from our seniors, and jeopardizes the well-being of future generations. I want you to know that, when Republican leaders put H.R. 1 up for a vote, I voted with a resounding “NO” because my first priority in Congress is improving opportunity for hardworking families in the 34th Congressional District.

From California to New York, and everywhere in between, I believe the House Republican leadership tax plan gives the top 1 percent and large corporations a massive tax break while raising taxes on middle-class and working families. The House bill eliminates deductions like state and local taxes, mortgage interest rates, medical expenses, and student loan interests that working families rely on.

What’s most alarming however is that California gets hurt the most! In the House version of the bill, the elimination of the state and local tax deduction will cost 80,406 households in our district an average of $17,538, according to IRS data. The House majority's tax plan also ends deductions for personal losses from natural disasters like earthquakes and wildfires, making it difficult for families affected to put their lives back together. In addition, the House version of the bill will worsen our nation’s housing and homelessness crisis by scrapping vital programs that currently fund 40 percent of affordable housing construction across the country. California alone would lose $2.2 billion in funding, an irreparable blow to Proposition HHH’s efforts to address homelessness in Los Angeles. Ultimately, the impact of the tax bill will reverberate throughout our state and nation, creating a negative multiplier effect on middle-class and working families.

I won’t support any tax plan that sets up a scenario that radically exacerbates income inequality in our country. I will always put the interests of my constituents first. You deserve a tax plan that helps you and your family, and I won’t stop fighting for that vision.

Sincerely,

Rep. Jimmy Gomez
