Jimmy Gomez on Opposing Republican Tax Bill WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Jimmy Gomez (D – Los Angeles) issued the following statement after voting against H.R. 1, a Republican bill that will raise taxes on California’s working families. “Today, Republicans passed a tax plan that cuts taxes for America’s wealthiest individuals and corporations at the expense of the working class. The so-called ‘Tax Cuts and Jobs Act’ simply doubles down on trickledown economics that have failed our country for 31 years. The disastrous bill sets the stage for Republicans to gut programs that working families rely on, including Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, and education. “Most alarming is that 11 California Republicans voted for this bill, serving as accomplices in destroying the future of America’s working families and stifling the economic growth of our state. H.R. 1 ends deductions for fire and earthquake recovery, dismantles the State and Local Tax (SALT) deductions, and cuts $2.2 billion in affordable housing construction. Californians need to reject the Republican tax plan and express their complete discontent.” ### |
