Lawmakers are also objecting to the quick timeline for approval. DOJ provided just an eight-day public comment period, ending Tuesday, after it announced the proposed settlement Sept. 22. A letter from Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D-Calif.) and 21 other California House Democrats asks to extend the public comment period by 60 days.
"Why do you want to rush it?" asked Assemblymember Miguel Santiago (D-Los Angeles). "There's no reason to get this done before the election."
