Congressman Jimmy Gomez Votes to Impeach Donald Trump for Incitement of Insurrection

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Jimmy Gomez (CA-34) voted to impeach President Donald Trump for inciting violence against the United States. Last Wednesday, domestic terrorists – inspired by the president – led an insurrection on the U.S. Capitol to overturn the presidential election and overthrow the government. In response, Congressman Gomez issued the following statement:

“Today, in the well of the House of Representatives, I once again voted to impeach President Donald Trump. It’s the same place where one week ago, the world watched as domestic terrorists – encouraged by the president and some of his supporters in Congress – perpetrated a deadly attack against the U.S. Capitol. And it’s the same room where I was forced to shelter in place with my colleagues as the president’s violent mob stalked the halls of this legislative body looking to carry out treasonous acts on behalf of Donald Trump.

“House Democrats weren’t alone in this effort to hold Donald Trump accountable. Numerous House Republicans – including the party's third-ranking House leader – joined us to cast their vote to impeach the president for incitement of an insurrection. The bipartisan nature of this historic vote highlights the urgency in removing Donald Trump from office and underscores the reality that he woefully failed to live up to the most basic and minimal expectations for his duties of office.

“The tragic events of last week demonstrate our democracy’s resilience, but when it’s attacked – when outside forces or those from within threaten it and put our country’s security in peril – we simply cannot afford to stay silent. My vote today to once again impeach Donald Trump represents my forceful defiance to him, those who commit acts of violence in his name, and anyone who threatens the sanctity of our democratic institutions. It represents my oath as a member of Congress to protect and defend the Constitution. And it represents the will of my constituents in Los Angeles who exercised their civic right to vote and turn the page on this dark chapter in our country’s history.”

Congressman Gomez is also a cosponsor of H.Res.25 to investigate and expel the Members of Congress who voted to overturn the election results and helped incite this siege on the Capitol.

Donald Trump is the third president to be impeached by the House of Representatives and the only president to be impeached twice.
