KQED: What Can Congress Learn from California's Minimum Wage Debate?

U.S. Rep. Jimmy Gomez, D-Los Angeles, was also in the state Assembly during California's minimum wage debate. Like Obernolte, he thought a regional minimum wage system would have been a better approach — one that would have raised the wage floor above $15 in pricey areas like the L.A. region.
But Gomez, who worked minimum wage jobs at Subway and Target after high school, said a lengthy debate on how to set a regional system was less important than moving quickly toward a wage hike.
