WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, in response to the verdict in the Derek Chauvin trial over the death of George Floyd, Congressman Jimmy Gomez (CA-34) released the following statement:
“Today, Derek Chauvin was held accountable for the murder of George Floyd. This verdict will never erase the pain and anguish inflicted on the Floyd family and our country. This decision reflects the justice Americans expect from their legal system, but we cannot turn our backs to the ongoing injustices waged against Black and Brown communities nationwide at the hands of police. To achieve a truly just country, we must act towards the realization of a future where Black and Brown people are not considered a threat simply because of the color of their skin and guilty until proven innocent. My Democratic colleagues and I remain committed to our fight for police reforms that will fundamentally transform our justice system to ensure it serves all Americans. Let us remember the generations of Black and Brown Americans who have suffered racial injustice and the many lives like George Floyd’s who were tragically stolen from their families.”
In response to the death of George Floyd in 2020, Congressman Gomez and House Democrats passed the George Floyd Justice in Policing Actlast year and again last month. This legislation would ban no-knock warrants, ban racial and religious profiling by law enforcement, end qualified immunity, stop the transfer of military-grade weapons to local law enforcement, create a national registry of police misconduct, and more.
