Congressman Jimmy Gomez Responds as North Korea Summit Concludes

Washington D.C. – In response to the conclusion of the North Korea Summit in Singapore, Congressman Jimmy Gomez (D-Los Angeles) released the following statement:

“Creating a greater openness with Pyongyang and working to dismantle their nuclear weapons program is clearly a step in the right direction, but such diplomatic efforts will be in vain if the United States fails to address North Korea’s appalling human rights record. As these talks continue to develop, it’s imperative for the Trump administration to hold the North Korean regime accountable for its past atrocities and to ensure a swift end to their crimes against humanity.

“Unlike the numerous congressional Republicans and conservative media outlets who attacked President Obama for ‘negotiating with our enemies’ during the Iran nuclear agreement, I will refrain from passing judgment on President Trump’s diplomatic efforts with North Korea during this sensitive time. But as the congressional representative of our country’s largest Korean American community, I am deeply disturbed over the White House’s refusal to reach out to my constituents for their consultation. Going forward, it is my hope that President Trump will listen to the voices of Korean Americans and recognize the importance of their support and engagement in pursuing lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula.”
