Rep. Jimmy Gomez Statement on William Nguyen Release from Vietnamese Custody

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Jimmy Gomez (D – Los Angeles) issued the following statement in response to his constituent, William Nguyen, being set free by a Vietnamese court after Nguyen was detained for taking part in a peaceful demonstration in Ho Chi Minh City on June 10, 2018.

"I take great comfort in knowing that my constituent, William Nguyen, will soon be reunited with his family after his harrowing ordeal in Vietnam. The sheer determination and resolve exhibited by the Nguyen family during this traumatic experience was nothing short of inspiring. I’d like to extend my profound appreciation to the diplomatic stakeholders and government officials who worked together to pursue a compassionate outcome that recognized William’s humanity and secured his freedom.”

On July 18, 2018, Congressman Gomez led a bipartisan letter with 19 Members of the House and Senate asking Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to secure Nguyen’s safe and swift return.
