Congressman Jimmy Gomez Joins Amicus Brief to Supreme Court Calling for LGBTQ Anti-Discrimination Protection

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Jimmy Gomez (D – Los Angeles) joined 209  other Members of Congress in filing an amicus brief to the U.S. Supreme Court in Masterpiece Cakeshop, Ltd. v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission, a pending case before the High Court that would decide whether public accommodations, like businesses, can discriminate against the LGBTQ community and other minority groups.

“The Supreme Court should make it absolutely clear that there is no room for LGBTQ discrimination in a cake shop, in a bathroom, in our armed services. Not anywhere,” said Congressman Jimmy Gomez. “I stand firmly against the notion that anyone can be treated unequally on the basis of who they love, what they look like, or who they worship. I am proud to add my voice to the fight for equality.”

The amicus brief can be viewed here.

A member of the House LGBT Equality Caucus, Congressman Jimmy Gomez represents Los Angeles, California, in the House of Representatives. He is a cosponsor of H.R. 2282, the Equality Act, which would amend the Civil Rights Act to forbid discrimination based on sex, gender identity, or sexual orientation.
