STATEMENT: Rep. Jimmy Gomez on the End of Temporary Protected Status for Haiti
Washington,
November 22, 2017
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Trump administration announced that effective July 22, 2019, temporary protected status for Haitian nationals would end, a shocking decision that would return 50,000 Haitians to the poorest country in the Americas. Congressman Jimmy Gomez (D – Los Angeles) issued the following statement. “As most of the country prepares to celebrate Thanksgiving, the Trump administration cruelly decided to shut out 50,000 Haitian TPS recipients who have peacefully lived and worked in our country since the devastating 2010 earthquake. After turning away 800,000 DREAMers and kicking out 2,500 Nicaraguans, President Trump is proving yet again that he has no shame or humanity. At this point only Congress can make up for the White House’s perpetual failures to help immigrant communities by passing the American Promise Act and the DREAM Act. This unconscionable decision can only be reversed if Congressional leadership chooses to act.” On November 1, 2017, Congressman Jimmy Gomez led a letter with 78 colleagues in Congress to urge the White House and DHS to renew TPS for Central America, Haiti, and Syria. Rep. Jimmy Gomez is a co-sponsor of the American Promise Act, legislation that creates a path to permanent, lawful residency for individuals who currently receive TPS and Deferred Enforcement Departure (DED). ### |
