Rep. Gomez Leads Discussion on Creating Jobs Through Infrastructure Investment with LA Metro in Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Jimmy Gomez (D – Los Angeles), a co-chair of the House Democratic Caucus Rebuilding America Task Force, held a roundtable discussion with Members of Congress and experts on how infrastructure investments would dramatically benefit working men and women by creating thousands of good paying jobs.

As part of the House Democratic Caucus Jobs for America Task Forces, the Rebuilding America Task Force discussed how investment by the federal government could improve American cities and create jobs for middle-class families. Congressman Jimmy Gomez noted that in the absence of federal infrastructure investment, the City of Los Angeles has independently raised funds in order to finance the city’s infrastructure needs.

“Nowhere is the need for increased infrastructure spending more apparent than in Los Angeles,” said Congressman Jimmy Gomez. “Our growing population and overburdened roads and railways have prompted our city to develop innovative solutions to make a dent in the dire infrastructure needs. Our state and local agencies however have done most of the heavy lifting so far, and it’s time for the federal government to step up and offer a job-creating infrastructure package that will propel our city forward.”

Congressman Jimmy Gomez invited Michael Davies, senior manager from the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (L.A. Metro), to provide expert testimony at the forum.

“We thank Congressman Gomez and the Rebuilding America Task Force for their focus on the important issue of infrastructure and how Rebuilding America can create direct and indirect job opportunities,” said Michael Davies, senior manager from the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority. “Los Angeles County Metro is working hard to leverage our local funds to be able to accelerate critical transportation projects and welcomes a bold infrastructure package from Congress that can help in our goal to bring more mobility and economic benefits to Los Angeles County’s 10 million residents.”

As towns across American continue to grow, it puts a strain on our infrastructure system. In order to continue serving the American people sufficiently, these structures must be up to date and properly functioning. An investment in such projects would mean more jobs and skill development for hard-working Americans. The five Democratic Caucus Jobs for America Task Forces will create opportunities for growth, boost hardworking families, and give every worker the opportunity to achieve the American dream by developing legislation focused on investing in key industries. The effort was launched by House Democratic Caucus.

“Investing in our nation’s infrastructure is a win for everyone. Our roads, bridges, schools, and hospitals get a much-needed update to better serve all Americans, while investments create jobs for millions,” said Chairman of the Democratic Caucus Joe Crowley. “I look forward to hearing from Congressman Jimmy Gomez on creating jobs and infrastructure project.”

“With nearly 100,000 bridges in our country old enough to qualify for Medicare and Social Security, there is no doubt that America’s infrastructure is in need of serious TLC,” said Vice Chair Linda Sánchez. “The Rebuilding America Task Force, led by Congressman Jimmy Gomez, is focused on investing in jobs and our future by developing innovative ways to modernize our nation’s infrastructure. By investing in a robust infrastructure, we will ensure that our country and our workers will be able to compete in the global marketplace.”
