 Today, Congressman Jimmy Gomez (D – Los Angeles) made the following statement in response to Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke's recommendation that a number of National Monuments be reduced in size:

"Today’s report by Secretary Zinke demonstrates the Trump administration’s true objective was never to increase public input on national monument designations but rather a blatant attempt to seize our treasured public lands and then sell them off to the highest bidder. National monuments, like the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument, preserve wildlife habitat, provide clean air and water, and expand recreational opportunities for current and future generations. Any action to remove protections for national monuments will prove to be wildly unpopular and potentially illegal."
