The United States is the only major country in the world without a paid parental leave policy. For Congressman Jimmy Gomez, this is not only a national issue but a personal one. As a child, his parents had to take off unpaid days of work in order to treat his pneumonia. These events inspired the Congressman to restructure the paid family leave policy in the California State Legislator, which gives him hope that it can be done on a larger, national front. There are benefits to a national parental leave policy including parents having peace of mind when building their new families. Research has also shown that it is good for the workplace of the parents as they becomes less stressed and focus more on their work responsibilities. |
