Congressman Jimmy Gomez Statement on President Trump Signing the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement Implementation Act into Law
Washington, January 29, 2020
Washington, D.C. – Today, in response to President Donald Trump signing the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement Implementation Act at the White House, Congressman Jimmy Gomez (CA-34), a member of the House Democratic Working Group on trade, released the following statement:
“Thanks to House Democrats, President Donald Trump just signed the most progressive trade pact in modern American history into law. And while members of the House Democratic Working Group on trade – those responsible for transforming the president’s original deal from a feckless draft into a substantive and enforceable agreement – weren’t invited to take part in this ceremony, all of us and our efforts were proudly represented on the very paper that now bears the president’s signature.
“As President Trump celebrates this historic agreement, it’s important to recognize he’s actually applauding the work of Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Chairman Richard Neal, and the members of the House Democratic Working Group who secured long-held Democratic priorities, including the scrapping of the president’s unacceptable giveaways to Big Pharma, adding an unprecedented labor enforcement mechanism, and securing over a half billion dollars toward environmental clean-ups and protection. In the end, the true winners of this trade deal are the American workers and their families who helped build our economy and who were in the forefront of our minds as we negotiated this agreement.”
