STATEMENT: Rep. Jimmy Gomez on U.S. District Court’s DACA Decision
Washington,
January 10, 2018
But this ruling does not provide DREAMers with the certainty they need. DREAMers deserve peace of mind, not the sickening instability that Trump has purposely inflicted.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Jimmy Gomez (D – Los Angeles) issued the following statement after the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California blocked the Trump administration’s rescission of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, under the federal Administrative Procedures Act, last night. “A California judge rightfully recognized that Trump was ‘arbitrary’ and ‘capricious’ in terminating DACA. There was no reason for Trump to end the program other than to sow mayhem in immigrant communities across the country. But this ruling does not provide DREAMers with the certainty they need. DREAMers deserve peace of mind, not the sickening instability that Trump has purposely inflicted. With Trump already hinting at an appeal, we need to keep the pressure up – and pass the Dream Act now.” Unless a higher court halts the decision, the ruling allows DACA recipients who failed to renew by the October 5 deadline a chance to submit renewal applications. The decision does not require U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to accept new applications for DACA status. Congressman Jimmy Gomez is a co-sponsor of H.R. 3440, the DREAM Act of 2017, which affords lawful permanent resident status to DACA recipients. ### |
