Los Angeles, CA - Congressman Jimmy Gomez (D - Los Angeles) today releases the following statement in response to reports of a nuclear test by North Korea, the sixth and most powerful nuclear test to date.

“I strongly condemn the latest provocation from North Korea to undermine peace and security in the Asia Pacific region. As our military leaders have stated, the United States will defend our homeland and our allies – South Korea and Japan – from North Korean aggression. We will not be intimidated by the reckless actions of a dictator.

“Ill-informed and dangerous rhetoric only serves to limit our options and box us into a corner when strategic flexibility is needed most. The way to meet this challenge is through serious engagement with our allies and with China. It is my sincere hope that this administration will work with Congress to find a diplomatic solution.

“As we await more information from our intelligence agencies and our allies, we need our leaders to make prudent and sober decisions to avoid further escalating the situation.”
