STATEMENT: Rep. Jimmy Gomez on the Fifth House Republican Stop-Gap Budget Bill

We simply cannot continue to govern this nation on a month-to-month basis, and we certainly cannot do it at the expense of America’s working families.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Jimmy Gomez (D – Los Angeles) issued the following statement after voting against the fifth stop-gap budget bill offered by the House Republican leadership since last fall.

“I voted NO on what is now the fifth stop-gap Continuing Resolution offered by the Republican majority. We simply cannot continue to govern this nation on a month-to-month basis, and we certainly cannot do it at the expense of America’s working families.

“For the fifth time since they’ve come in control of all three branches of government, the Republicans have demonstrated their unique inability to govern our nation with responsibility, competence, or foresight.

“Rather than working to pass a long-term budget that addresses the priorities of America’s working families – such as protecting DREAMers, saving Americans’ endangered pensions, or providing desperately needed disaster relief – Republicans instead chose to spend precious time and energy on passing a tax scam to the sole benefit of billionaires and corporations.

“Now, thanks to the negligence of the Republican majority, we found ourselves once again narrowly avoiding another government shutdown. To make matters worse, our irresponsible President is stoking the fire by calling for a shutdown if Congress does not fund his xenophobic, anti-immigrant agenda.”
