Rep. Jimmy Gomez Denounces Trump Administration Decision to End Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Honduras

Congressman Jimmy Gomez (D – Los Angeles) issued the following statement after the Trump administration announced the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation for Honduras, with an 18-month deadline:

“Unfortunately, it’s no surprise that Donald Trump has decided to kick out 57,000 Hondurans who have worked, paid taxes, and raised children in the U.S. for decades.” said Rep. Jimmy Gomez. “The decision to end TPS for Honduras fits an ongoing pattern of xenophobia that has emanated from the White House — something that was made explicit when Trump referred to TPS and African nations as ‘shithole countries’. Hondurans will now be among the hundreds of thousands of TPS recipients from El Salvador, Haiti, Nicaragua, Sudan, and Nepal that will be forcibly torn from their families, jobs, and businesses — only to be sent back to a life of danger and uncertainty. I urge my colleagues in Congress to protect TPS holders from Trump’s troubling agenda of mass deportation, and work to immediately pass the American Promise Act.”

On May 1, 2018, Congressman Jimmy Gomez was joined by Rep. Norma Torres (CA-35) and Rep. Jim McGovern (MA-2) in leading a letter signed by 53 Members to Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, urging her to renew Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Honduras. Rep. Jimmy Gomez is also a co-sponsor of the American Promise Act, legislation that creates a path to permanent, lawful residency for individuals who currently receive TPS and Deferred Enforcement Departure (DED).
