Congressman Jimmy Gomez Holds Korean American Community Roundtable to Address Local Issues and Global Concerns

Los Angeles, CA – Today, Congressman Jimmy Gomez (CA-34) held a Korean American Community Roundtable at the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce to address issues and concerns facing his Korean American constituents.

Leaders from local community organizations discussed an array of topics, ranging from immigration policy and human rights to President Donald Trump’s upcoming summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and the Congressman’s recent bipartisan delegation to the Republic of Korea.

Congressman Gomez released the following statement following the event’s conclusion:

“As members of Congress, we have an obligation to not only represent our constituents in Washington, but also to amplify their collective voices to ensure their needs are being met. It was with this solemn responsibility in mind that my office held today’s Korean American Community Roundtable. Those who call the 34th Congressional District home can rest assured that my office will always provide a platform where such voices can be heard and respected.

“During today’s roundtable, representatives from local Korean American community groups had an opportunity to share their perspectives with me on numerous issues, one of which was the upcoming summit between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un. I expressed a cautious optimism about the prospects of peace on the Korean Peninsula, acknowledged the differing viewpoints between younger and older generation Korean Americans, and conveyed my disappointment regarding the Trump Administration’s failure to reach out to Korean Americans during these sensitive negotiations.

“As part of our discussion about diplomatic relations with North Korea, I briefed roundtable participants about my recent congressional delegation to the Republic of Korea following the third inter-Korea summit in Panmunjom. During my seven-day trip, I had the privilege of meeting with Ministers of Defense, Foreign Affairs, and Trade, as well as the Speaker of the National Assembly and the Director of National Intelligence. These high-level meetings, coupled with my interactions with business leaders and local area students, underscored the critical relationship between the United States and South Korea, one of most important allies in the region.

“I’d like to extend my sincere appreciation to those who took part in today’s event. Their valuable feedback will play an important role in my continued efforts to advocate for the rights and dignity of Los Angeles’ Korean American community on Capitol Hill.”
