Rep. Jimmy Gomez Demands Answers from Social Security Administration on Potential DOGE Access

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Jimmy Gomez (CA-34) and all Democratic members of the Ways and Means Committee are demanding urgent answers from the Social Security Administration (SSA) about the security of Americans’ sensitive personal data. They have given Acting Commissioner Michelle King 72 hours to respond to key questions about potential risks, whether Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency (“DOGE”) has attempted to access SSA systems, and what security measures are in place. This comes after DOGE reportedly accessed the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s federal payment systems and may now be targeting the SSA. The agency holds highly sensitive personal information, including Social Security numbers, banking details, home addresses, medical records, disability status, and information on deceased family members. “Social Security has been the bedrock promise of economic security in our nation for the last century,” the lawmakers wrote. “After a lifetime of work or in life’s most precarious moments, it provides benefits to approximately 70 million people across the United States, including seniors, survivors, and people with disabilities.” “We will not stand by and allow the sensitive personal information of our nation’s Social Security beneficiaries to be politicized or bought and sold to the highest bidder, or to allow any harm to their Social Security benefits,” the lawmakers continued. “The stakes are too high and the consequences too grave.” You can read the full letter HERE. Rep. Jimmy Gomez has been fighting back against Trump’s illegal power grab, including his attempt to illegally freeze federal funding. He recently visited Echo Park CDC Head Start in LA to hear from parents about the harm Trump’s actions could cause working families. After public pressure, the White House reversed its blanket freeze, but Trump is still pushing funding cuts. With Project 2025 architect Russell Vought leading the Office of Budget and Management (OBM), Rep. Gomez is fighting to protect critical programs working families rely on from Trump’s attacks. |
