Los Angeles, CA – Today, U.S. Representative Jimmy Gomez (CA-34)—a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, which oversees tax policy and federal Medicare and Medicaid payments—hosted a roundtable discussion and press conference at the Community Clinic Association of Los Angeles County (CCALAC). He was joined by more than a dozen LA health clinic providers to highlight the devastating impact of Trump and Congressional Republicans’ plan to gut Medicaid, cut Medi-Cal funding and put 425,000 people in CA-34 at risk of losing basic health care. “Trump and Republicans want to gut health care for working families, kids, and people with disabilities just to give tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy,” said Rep. Jimmy Gomez. “These health care cuts will force clinics to close, put doctors and nurses out of work, and leave families without access to affordable quality care. Community clinics save billions by keeping people out of the ER—and if these cuts go through, working families will pay the price.” “As a physician for 30 years and CEO of White Memorial Community Health Center, I know firsthand how devastating these cuts would be,” said Dr. Grace Floutsis, CEO of White Memorial Community Health Center. “More than 85% of our patients rely on Medicaid, and if this funding is cut, many will lose access to critical care. Limiting these services has real consequences—like a 40-year-old mother of three in the early stages of breast cancer who could be forced to go without care entirely and lose her life or delay her treatment.” “These Medicaid cuts are about giving tax breaks to billionaires at the expense of the most vulnerable—and we won’t stand for it,” said Darryn Harris, Chief Government Affairs Officer at St. John’s Community Health Clinic. “Everyone has a right to health care, and the challenges we face are clear: if patients lose coverage, their health needs won’t disappear. Instead, they’ll go untreated, worsen, and lead to more costly ER visits—or even death. Well-funded community clinics save taxpayers nearly $40 billion in preventative care every year. Cutting Medicaid doesn’t save money—it costs lives.” Earlier this year, the Trump administration illegally froze federal funds, disrupting payments to community clinics and jeopardizing health care services for millions of Americans. The funding freeze blocked clinics from accessing the federal payment portal. After Congressman Gomez’s efforts, along with public outcry, the administration was forced to rescind the Office of Budget and Management (OBM) memo that directed the freeze, although some funding remains frozen. New reports indicate that Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has been granted access to the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services’ key payments and contracting systems, raising alarms that Trump’s allies could manipulate health care benefits, delay payments, or restrict access to care for political or financial gain. |
