Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Jimmy Gomez (D – Los Angeles) released the following statement in response to the Supreme Court’s ruling against public-sector unions in Janus v. American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) Council 31: “Today’s ruling represents a stunning setback for American workers who continue to struggle to secure economic stability for themselves and their families. In the wake of such a decision, it will be important for Congress to work even harder to ensure our nation’s labor force has the capacity to join a union and enhance the safeguards needed to secure better working conditions, better wages, and access to health care. “The decision struck a personal cord for me as I began my political career in the labor community as an organizer and continue to fight for their rights today in the House of Representatives. Through my work with AFSCME and the United Nurses Association of California, I have a unique understanding as to how important strong unions are in creating an economy that gives all Americans a chance to thrive, not just the wealthiest among us. No court case is going to stop our movement, and those in the labor community can rest assured I will continue to proudly represent them and fight for their dignity on the national stage.” ### |
