WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressional Dad Caucus Chair Jimmy Gomez (CA-34), Democratic Whip Katherine Clark (MA-03), and U.S. Senator Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) joined the Groundwork Collaborative and the Century Foundation at a press conference to speak out against President Trump’s trade policy placing a “baby tax” on parents and raising costs on essentials. The press conference comes after the world’ largest retailer Walmart announced it will raise prices on key items due to Trump’s tariffs.

“As the dad of a toddler, I know firsthand how expensive it is to raise a kid-- and this administration is making it a lot worse,” said Dads Caucus Chair Jimmy Gomez. “Trump’s dumb tariffs aren’t just bad policy — they’re a baby tax on parents.”

“When Republicans show up for work, all they do is take from moms and dads and kids: cutting health care, taking food off the table, defending public schools, and even imposing a baby tax,” said Democratic Whip Katherine Clark. “In a matter of months, Republicans have unilaterally increased the cost of living through tariffs on car seats, cribs, toys, and baby clothes. Walmart just announced they’re hiking the prices of bananas.”

"Instead of thinking about these working families and giving an exemption to the tariffs for these essential child products, [Trump] is giving it for other products and other friends of his,” said Senator Gallego, a member of the Congressional Dads Caucus. “So our message is very simple: take the baby tax away, exempt child car seats. Truly think about what the effects of something like this are. We're not anti-tariffs, but we certainly are anti-taxing families, especially the baby tax.”

As Dads Caucus Chairman, Rep. Gomez is leading a growing coalition of more than 45 members—including three senators: Andy Kim (D-NJ), Ruben Gallego (D-AZ), and Adam Schiff (D-CA)—in advocating for family-friendly policies that help working families afford their mortgages, rent, child care, and everyday essentials.

The Congressional Dads Caucus was founded after the 118th Congress Speaker vote to provide a forum for members of Congress to push legislation that supports working families. Since then, the caucus has gained momentum as a leading voice for policy solutions that help families thrive and make America more affordable—including creating a national paid leave program, increasing access to affordable child care, expanding the Child Tax Credit, and ensuring working parents have the resources they need to provide for their families.
