Statement: Rep. Jimmy Gomez on Acting ICE Director Homan's Threat to Punish California Because of SB 54
Los Angeles,
October 6, 2017
LOS ANGELES, CA – Congressman Jimmy Gomez (D – Los Angeles) issued the following response to Acting Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Tom Homan’s statement that the agency has “no choice but to conduct at-large arrests in local neighborhoods and at worksites”: “ICE Acting Director Homan’s callous threat to indiscriminately target mothers, fathers, and people without criminal records is reprehensible. This policy will do nothing to make our communities safer and instead will terrorize law abiding communities, disrupt family life, and harm the economy. ICE has limited resources and should spend those resources wisely. Targeting families while they shop for groceries, drop kids off at school, or head to work is fiscally and morally bankrupt.” Acting Director Homan made the statement after Governor Brown signed SB 54, the California Values Act. The bill was introduced by Senate President pro Tempore Kevin De León (D-Los Angeles) to protect the rights of immigrants living in the state and will go into effect on January 1, 2018. ### |
