Los Angeles, CA – Congressman Jimmy Gomez (CA-34) issued the following statement marking the start of Black History Month:
“Black History Month is a time for all Americans to reflect and appreciate the African American community’s contributions to our nation, our culture, and our shared identity,” said Rep. Gomez. “The resilience and determination of the African American community has produced some of the most influential figures in society from the realms of politics, economics, business, art, athletics, and entrepreneurship. However, the advancements made by these individuals would not be possible were it not for the sacrifice and courage of those who came before them, putting their lives on the line in the struggle for equality. As we observe Black History Month, let us honor those like the late Shirley Chisholm and my colleague Congressman John Lewis – whose contributions to the ongoing fight for justice continues to transform our country for the better.”
