WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Congressman Jimmy Gomez (CA-34), Chair of the Congressional Dads Caucus, led fellow members in unveiling a new six-bill legislative package as part of their Babies Over Billionaires agenda, a push to lower costs for working families by eliminating harmful tariffs on essential baby products.
Each bill in the package, introduced by a different member of the Dads Caucus, targets a specific category of baby essentials. Together, the legislation would repeal tariffs that have driven up prices on everyday items families depend on, including formula, diapers, toys, cribs, clothing, and strollers.
Dads Caucus members say the need for relief is urgent — and personal.
“Our Babies Over Billionaires Agenda is all about lowering costs for families by exempting everyday essentials from Trump’s tariff tax,” said Rep. Jimmy Gomez. “Any parent, including myself, knows how expensive it is to raise a child, and as currently formulated, the typical American household can now expect to pay an average of $4,600 more annually because of Trump's dumb tariffs. Our legislation would help working families from having to choose between paying rent and buying their child new shoes, a car seat, or baby formula.”
"As a dad of three young kids, I know just how expensive raising a baby can be. As prices skyrocket under President Trump’s reckless tariff policies, working families are under even more stress as many struggle to make ends meet. I’m proud to introduce legislation, alongside my fellow members of the Dad’s Caucus, to exempt necessities like baby formula, highchairs, and baby bottles from these tariffs,” said Rep. Derek Tran (CA-45). “This should not be a partisan issue. I hope that my colleagues on both sides of the aisle will join me to bring down costs for working families and make sure that our kids can access the resources they need to grow and thrive.”
“Being the father of two young children informs a lot of the work I do in Congress,” said Rep. Suhas Subramanyam (VA-10). “I know how expensive it is to raise children and make sure that they have all the resources they need to grow up to live healthy lives. Working families in the Commonwealth, and across the country, are facing the brunt of Trump’s tariff taxes, which are raising prices on essential goods that keep kids safe, like car seats and strollers, by 30% or more. The legislation I introduced with the Dads Caucus will spare families from the crushing costs of Trump’s tariffs and I hope my Republican colleagues will join me in what should be a bipartisan effort to lower costs.”
“This is an issue that affects real people and real families. As a father, I understand firsthand the costs of raising children and the expense of essential baby items,” said Rep. Shomari C. Figures (AL-02). "In the district I represent, the median individual household income is just north of $30,000. Families simply can't afford rising prices on critical products like cribs and mattresses. This bill seeks to provide parents with tariff relief on safe sleep products to help them afford the things they need for their families.”
“Raising a family is already expensive, and yet President Trump is needlessly making it harder for families to simply get by. No one voted for the President to put a special tax on hardworking families when they have a baby – but that’s exactly what Trump’s tariff chaos is doing. Trump’s baby tax raises costs for families by making everything from diapers and bottles to strollers, car seats, clothing and toys more expensive. We can all agree that babies should come before billionaires, and so I’m proud to join fellow Dads Caucus members in introducing this pro-family legislative package that puts our kids and hardworking families first” said Rep. Brad Schneider (IL-10).
“In the aftermath of the Trump Tariff tornado, new families are being hit the hardest.” Rep. Steven Horsford (NV-04) said. “Parents are struggling to survive — let alone afford basic baby hygiene products like diapers, shampoo, and wipes. That’s why I’m proud to work with my fellow lawmakers in the Dads Caucus to introduce the Baby Hygiene Tariff Exclusion Act. While Trump caters to billionaires, we’re fighting to make essentials affordable for working families.”
Today’s bill package is the latest push by the Congressional Dads Caucus to reduce the cost of parenting in America and provide economic relief to families raising the next generation.
