LOS ANGELES, CA – Representative Jimmy Gomez (CA-34) is calling on the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) to immediately halt its planned closure of the Chinatown Contract Postal Unit (CPU) #323 in Los Angeles.
“The Chinatown CPU has been a lifeline for people in this community and shutting it down would force vulnerable residents to travel further for their mail services,” said Congressman Gomez. “Folks with mobility, language, or transportation barriers need a reliable and inexpensive option in their neighborhood, and I’m committed to ensuring the USPS remains accessible to not just the people in our community, but to all Americans.” Peter Kwong, the longtime operator of the Chinatown CPU echoed these concerns: “I am deeply concerned about the proposal to close our Contract Postal Unit (CPU). On the surface, this decision may appear to reduce expenses for USPS, but in reality, it will create greater costs, inefficiencies, and community disruption.” Kwong covers all staffing and operating expenses, yet USPS recently announced its decision to terminate the contract as part of broader cost-cutting measures. The Chinatown CPU has provided vital access to postal services for decades, leaving many long-time customers without other options. In a letter sent to USPS, Congressman Gomez demanded that the agency:
USPS is charging ahead with harmful cuts and closures that devastate communities and local economies. Congressman Gomez will continue to push USPS for accountability for these actions. |
