Statement by Rep. Jimmy Gomez on Senate Passage of ‘Motion to Proceed’ With ACA Repeal Bill

Today, Congressman Jimmy Gomez (D – Los Angeles) issued the following statement in response to the Senate’s passage of the Motion to Proceed to Calendar #120, H.R. 1628, the American Health Care Act of 2017:

“I am disgusted by Senate Republican’s vote on the Motion to Proceed. With this vote, Senate Republicans have begun the process of taking away health care from millions of Americans.

“There will be many amendments and changes over the next 20 hours as the Senate begins its process, but the basic facts underlying Republican repeal efforts have not changed. At least 22 million Americans will lose health coverage; health insurance premiums will rise; patient cost sharing will increase; and patient protections will no longer exist.

“The 50 Republican Senators plus Vice President Pence know they voted for these heinous provisions when they voted for the Motion to Proceed. They willingly voted to destroy the health of the American people and I will do everything in my power to hold them accountable.

“Now is the time for Americans everywhere to rise up and fight for their health care.”
