Congress cannot provide health care for some by cutting health care for others.
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Jimmy Gomez (D – Los Angeles) issued the following statement after voting NO on the Republican reauthorization bill for the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and Community Health Centers (CHCs): “Today, Republicans unjustifiably politicized a bill that would reauthorize the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), Community Health Centers (CHCs), and other important expiring health initiatives in yet another effort to sabotage the Affordable Care Act (ACA). I simply could not support a bill that seeks to destroy our health care system by raiding the Prevention and Public Health Fund and raising Medicare premiums on seniors. “CHIP and CHCs are a vital part of our health care system that I strongly support, but I will not fall for the false choice put forward by Republicans, that in order to provide health care for some, Congress must cut health care for others. This is yet another political stunt put forward by Republicans to save face after their failed attempts to sabotage the ACA. “We cannot wait to act. California will soon deplete its CHIP funding and will be forced to cut back critical health services for the over two million children in our state that depend on this lifeline. Without new funding, CHCs in California will be forced to close centers, cut jobs, and stop treating 6.2 million Californians. I urge my Republican colleagues to work with us in a bipartisan fashion to reauthorize CHIP and CHCs.” ### |
