STATEMENT: Rep. Jimmy Gomez on Michael Flynn’s Guilty Plea in Special Counsel Mueller’s Russia Investigation

It is critical that we determine whether Flynn acted on behalf of Russia and who else in the White House has been compromised by a foreign power.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Jimmy Gomez (D – Los Angeles), a member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, issued the following statement after President Trump’s former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn pled guilty to one count of “willfully and knowingly” making "false, fictitious, and fraudulent statements" to the FBI regarding his relationship with Russia.

“The guilty plea agreed to by President Trump’s first national security advisor raises serious questions about the nature of his deception and escalates the gravity of the Special Counsel’s investigation. How far Michael Flynn was able to undermine and sabotage U.S. policy before and after President Trump took office is of serious concern. It is critical that we determine whether Flynn acted on behalf of Russia and who else in the White House has been compromised by a foreign power. Now more than ever, Mueller must continue to urgently follow the facts, unobstructed by the White House, before it’s too late.”

A member of the powerful House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, Congressman Jimmy Gomez, with Ranking Member Elijah Cummings and other Democratic Committee Members, sent a letter to Chairman Trey Gowdy on October 18, 2017, laying out the case for issuing a subpoena to compel the White House to produce documents relating to former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn and his failure to report his foreign travel and contacts.

On July 28, 2017, Congressman Jimmy Gomez also introduced the BRIBE Act, which would require the Director of the National Intelligence to provide Congress with a report on any efforts made by foreign governments or other foreign entities to bribe or influence the President, Vice President, their family members, or any members of the Trump Administration.
