Gomez, Colleagues Urge FEMA And SBA To Extend Disaster Assistance Deadlines Until The End Of The Year
Washington,
February 10, 2025
LOS ANGELES, CA — Today, Congressman Jimmy Gomez (CA-34) and all Members of the California Congressional Delegation, from both sides of the aisle, called on FEMA and the Small Business Administration (SBA) to extend the March 10th deadline for federal disaster assistance. “We are writing to urge you to extend all deadlines for federal assistance until at least December 31, 2025 for victims to apply for assistance under the January 7, 2025 California Wildfires and Straight-line Winds Major Disaster Declaration,” wrote the lawmakers. “The Palisades and the Eaton fires have only now been fully contained. Federal benefits are to cover uninsured losses. Many families do not know yet how much it will cost to rebuild and repair, and it will be many months before these families know whether their losses exceed their insurance. Some are reluctant to apply for aid until they know if they have uninsured losses and are therefore eligible,” continued the lawmakers. A copy of the letter is available here. In response to the devastating Los Angeles fires, Congressman Jimmy Gomez (CA-34) has taken swift action to support affected communities and ensure a strong federal response. He surveyed the area just north of CA-34 in Altadena to assess the damage by the fires, and he helped distribute resources to victims at the Los Angeles Mission. He has also pushed the Trump administration and House Speaker Mike Johnson to deliver disaster aid with no strings attached and has demanded answers on the erroneous evacuation orders that caused widespread confusion. Additionally, Rep. Gomez is urging the EPA to create an air quality task force to address the long-term health impacts of the fires. His office continues to provide critical resources and assistance to constituents impacted by the disaster. ### |
