Rep. Gomez Delivers $20 Million in Federal Funding for Citizenship and Integration Grant Program

In March 2022, Congressman Gomez secured $20 million in federal funding for the Citizenship and Integration Grant Program in the Fiscal Year 2022 Omnibus legislation, a 100% increase. Rep. Gomez has long advocated for the increase of funding for citizenship education and immigrant integration grants and has hosted citizenship workshops across the 34th Congressional District. Since 2017, the Office of Congressman Gomez has helped over 1,000 constituents with immigration cases, including applications for lawful permanent resident status (also known as a Green Card), employment authorization, and visas.

In March 2022, Congressman Gomez announced the inclusion of $9,093,000 in funding for community projects in California’s 34th Congressional District in the Appropriations funding package for Fiscal Year 2022. Congressman Gomez secured this funding for nine projects, including the L.A. River Ecosystem Restoration P3 Pilot Project, Highland Park Youth Arts Center Renovation project, White Memorial Medical Center’s Catheterization Laboratory Expansion project, Community Cooling Boyle Heights project, Ramona Gardens Natural Park project, Pico Union Labor Training and Mutual Aid Center project, Project SOAR, Para Los Niños Youth Workforce Services project, and for affordable housing in Chinatown.

Rep. Gomez Leads 98 Members in Urging Biden Administration to Designate Ukraine for TPS or DED and Special Student Relief

In February 2022, Congressman Gomez led a letter with 98 of his House Colleagues urging the Biden administration to immediately designate 18 months of Temporary Protected Status (TPS), Deferred Enforced Departure (DED), and Special Student Relief (SSR) for Ukraine. Russian military aggression in Ukraine has led to a humanitarian crisis, which continues to worsen. The letter also requests a 180-day registration period and the launch of a culturally competent outreach campaign to notify the impacted community of the decision.

Rep. Gomez, Speaker Pelosi Hail the Child Tax Credit Program

In July 2021, Congressman Gomez and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi joined local childcare providers and working families at the Barrio Action Youth and Family Center in El Sereno to announce the start of monthly Child Tax Credit payments from the American Rescue Plan. Beginning on July 15, 2021, over 90% of families nationwide will receive $250 per month for each child age 6-17 and $300 per month for each child age 0-5. In total, families will receive $3,000 or $3,600 per child. Congressman Gomez and Speaker Pelosi were joined by Congresswomen Judy Chu (CA-27) and Karen Bass (CA-37) and Tammy Membreño, Executive Director of the Barrio Action Youth and Family Center.

Rep. Gomez Helps Ensure Mass COVID-19 Vaccination Site in CA-34

In February 2021, Congressman Gomez worked with the Biden administration to open a mass COVID-19 vaccination site at California State University, Los Angeles in CA-34. This site run, by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES), administered around half a million vaccines to Angelenos during this public health crisis.

Rep. Gomez Demands Closure of ICE’s Irwin County Detention Center

In September 2020, Congressman Gomez traveled with his Hispanic Caucus colleagues to the Irwin County Detention Center (ICDC) in Ocilla, Georgia to investigate claims of medical abuse and speak directly with detainees. Congressman Gomez then led colleagues in demanding the release of all victims at the ICDC, stays to their deportations by the Trump administration, access to federal investigators, and the closure of this ICE-run facility. In May 2021, the Biden administration announced it was ending it’s contract with the ICDC.

Rep. Gomez Asks IRS to Investigate NRA’s Tax-Exempt Status

In September 2020, Congressman Gomez asked the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to review the tax-exempt status of both the National Rifle Association (NRA) and the NRA Foundation in light of recent reports of the NRA’s self-dealing and abuse of its tax status. The New York Attorney General continues its case to dissolve the NRA, and the IRS has since begun investigating NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre for tax fraud.
